Canadian Club Winter Festival 2012 Welcome to the 2012 version of our Winter Festival. This year we will celebrate a family day at Tryvann Ski Area at Holmenkollen in Oslo.

Date: Sunday, February 12
Time: 12:00 – 18:00
Where: At the Lavvo at the Tryvann Ski Area (look for the Canadian flag)

Activities: Cross country, downhill skiing and other outdoor adventures

Please note that equipment rental, lift tickets and other expenses related to the activities must be covered by the individual participants.

We have booked the Lavvo (tent) at Tryvann along with a fire pit for warming and cooking. We encourage our members, families and friends to bring their thermos filled with warm drinks. We will supply hotdogs for grilling.

We encourage our members to bring along family and friends to make this a great day at Tryvann.

So that we can estimate the right amount of hotdogs we ask that you RSVP by February 10th to canadianclub(dot)norway(at)gmail(dot)com.

Looking forward to seeing you on the slopes February 12th!

Next up, St. Valentine's Day Dinner.

Information Evening without the Ambassador. Our information evening was a intimate gathering but turned out to be very successful and interesting. Thanks goes to Eugenie Panitcherska from the Embassy for giving us and update on events in Canada as well as activities at the Embassy here in Norway. Thanks also for Miriam Segal and Barbara Woll for supplying dessert for us to enjoy.

Club Night January Club Night was a fun evening at Brighton Pub on January 11th. We kicked off the new year with a a good turn out of old and new faces. Next Club Night is February 11th for St. Valentine's Day. More info to come.

Club Night December Club Night was tremendous fun! We tried out Tilt a bar at Rockefeller for drinks, discussions and a few games of shuffleboard. Busy place but a great evening.

We are now losing our Pub-meister Derek. He is stepping down from organizing our monthly Club-Nights. But we will continue to forge ahead. We are looking for a new person that will take his place. In the meantime, we will be setting a rotating schedule between 3 places. These will be announced early in the new year. Anyone wishing to fill Derek's shoes as our new Pub-meister, please get in touch with us.

The Canadian Club Christmas Dinner was a great success with around 5000 kr. raised for charity with the raffle. As well it was our last official arrangement with Ambassador John Haneaford and his wife Anne Lawson. They will be heading back to Canada for Christmas and John will begin his new job on January 9, 2012. A nice standing ovation for the both of them at the dinner. They will be missed.

A special thanks to Janette Fjeldstad and Gabriele Haddrath for organizing a wonderful evening. Great job!

Other planned events to look for in the near future.

Winter Festival and Pancake Breakfast - February 12th
Canada Day - June 17th

As many of saw this year we were unable to have a Halloween Party. The reason for this was we are lacking people to organize it. We would like to get this event back on track for next year, so if you are willing to help please let us know.

So far in 2011 ...

Club Night November Club Night was held at 3 Brødre Piano Bar on November 8th. Our favourite Canadian Piano player, Barry, performed our favourites and the poppies were a big hit. 650 NOK was sent to the Canadian Legion as our donation.

Club Night October Club Night was held at Olympen (Grønlandsleiret 15 0190 Oslo). A nice meal and evening with some familiar faces as well as some new ones!
Club Night September Club Night was held at Internasjonalen, Youngstorget 2 on Thursday September 15th.
Club Night in August turned out to be a success after all, even given the short notice of the change of venues. Our group enjoyed the sunshine at Aker Brygge with some new faces showing up as well. We hope that Derek has a speedy recovery and is back next month!

Club Night at Gloria Flames on Thursday July 14th, was well attended. Seems like not everyone has left the country for the summer. Good to see some new faces out for this one.

Canada Day on June 19th was not blessed with the best weather, but almost 200 showed up for the annual picnic at the Official Residence. Clouds, rain and sun came and went throughout the day. Thanx again to Derek and his group of organizers for putting on another successful Canada Day.

Club Night June 14th was a great evening on the patio at Olivia's on Hegdehaugsveien. Nice to see new and old faces out. Seemed like the members from Vancouver stayed home, maybe a little nervous about tonight's game?

Club-Night! for May was held at Kafe Asylet at Grønland, first outdoor get together for our Club Night in 2011.

Club-Night! in April we meet at Jacob Aall, Good time and a good start to summer! Rather early for us in Norway.

Club Night on March 15th at the Dubliner, in honour of St. Paddy's day, was a huge success. Lots of people in attendance and it seems our club is more interested in the social aspect as the skating before hand was not well attended. But the Dub is always a popular place and good to see so many people out!

Winter Festival was held under sunny skies at the Official Residence on March 5th. 85 people enjoyed a pancake breakfast and then headed out to the outdoors for skiing, skating and tobogganing! Thanx to the generous offer from the Ambassador and his wife to open their home and yard for our club and to the Ambassador for his excellent work on the skating rink!

24 members of The Canadian Club enjoyed dinner at Brasseri France to celebrate St. Valentine's Day. Good food and wine and an excellent group enjoyed the evening. Thanx to Derek for organizing the event. Pictures to come soon.

January 26th was the Information Evening with the Ambassador. 40 people came to listen to the Ambassador give an excellent summary of the political situation in Canada and an update on the latest work the Embassy in Norway is working on. See the photographs on the Pictures page.

January's "Club Night" was held at Justisen (www.justisen.no) at Møllergaten 15 on January 11th.

Here's what took place in 2010 ...

Monthly "Club Nights" in Oslo: Around the second week of each month, a bunch of us meet up for drinks, grub, and idle chatter. Occasionally we have special members-only gatherings, but most club nights are open to all. It's an excellent opportunity to get to know us. Here's where we met in 2010: January 12, at Horgan's; February 13, Valentine's Dinner at D/S Louise, Aker Brygge; March 11, at The Dubliner; April 13, at 3 Brødre; May 12, at Asylet; June 10, at Kafe Celsius; July 7, at Südøst; August 12, at Aker Brygge; September 15, at Parkteatret; October 16, at Sushi & Wok; November 11, at The Dubliner (Whiskey Bar); and December 15, at Dr. Jekyll's.

Information Evening: Our annual Information Evening with the Ambassador was held on Wednesday, February 10. Ambassador John Hannaford updated about 40 guests on current events and the political climate in Canada, followed by dessert and coffee.

Olympic Opening Celebration: Saturday, February 13. To kick off Vancouver Winter Olympics in style, Ambassador John Hannaford and Ms Anne Lawson kindly invited all members and friends of the Canadian Club to the Official Residence on the to watch the Opening Ceremonies. The club provided a pancake breakfast, and afterwards non-Olympians of all ages participated in winter sports in the residence's spacious grounds. Here is a video of the event made by Kjell Brataas.

Ski Weekend: On March 5-7, twelve CanClubbers made the 2.5-hour trek from Oslo to Trysil for the ski weekend. There was a good mix of veterans and newcomers, and conditions were excellent. As usual, no one went away hungry. Derek made chicken filets and mashed potatoes. Bruce made his fabulous apple muffins again, and Hanne and Jay served pancakes, bacon and eggs on Sunday. Special thanks to Bruce Boyd for a well-organized weekend!

Canada Day Picnic: In cooperation with the Embassy and the rest of the Canadian-Norwegian community in the Oslo region, the Canadian Club plays a central role in organizing the Canada Day picnic at the Official Residence, Bygdøynesveien 15, Oslo. The 2010 picnic was held on Sunday, June 20. Nearly 200 of us had a terrific day in perfect weather. We broke in a new tug of war rope (it snapped last year!), and the West carried the day. Special thanks to John and Anne for being such great hosts, and to committee chair Derek for excellent organization.

Golf Tournament: Saturday, June 26. Under sunny skies we held the Canadian Club Golf Tournament at the Krokhol Golfbane on the southeast edge of Oslo. Congratulations to Jaye Smith, Dave Kurtz, Jørgen, Steinar Kjus and Gunnar Hoel for a well-played round. It was a close competition that came down to a poor performance from the MacDonald team (the Bogey hole). Great drive from Jørgen and Gunnar almost stole the "Closest to the Pin" from Steve. Thanks for Doug Lynch for setting us up with the course and especially the golf carts!! The scramble format was fun and worked out well. Thanks to Steve MacDonald and Jaye Smith for putting a fine day together.

Halloween Party: Sunday, October 31, at Disen gård in Oslo. Those in attendance enjoyed games, food and entertainment from Klovnen Knut! Around 35 kids were dressed in costumes, and by the looks of all the small ones in attendance, the future of the club looks great. There were many good comments and the organizers -- Turi, Marissa, Wendy, Bruce and Jay -- did an excellent job again this year. However, an event like this takes a toll on the organizers, and many won't be back to help out next year. So if the event is to survive, we need some people to step up and help out. The board will begin its search early in the new year for new organizers. Pictures will be attached to the Pictures page shortly.

Christmas Dinner: Tuesday, December 7, at the Ambassador's residence. This year the evening was hosted by Anne Lawson and everyone was treated to a festive evening with a traditional turkey dinner. Once again the raffle was extremely successful, raising over 6000 kroner for charity. The charities that will be donated to will be decided at our board meeting in January. A very special evening that has become a favourite for many of the club's members. Thank you to Janette, Gabriele and Jo for their work in organizing the event.
